Family engagement in education is critical to student success and educators play a critical role when it comes to fostering effective school-family-community partnerships. Unfortunately, there is a common narrative in schools that some families are “unreachable” or that “they don’t care.” This session will help to reframe the narrative of the disengaged family, providing different ways to conceptualize effective partnerships. It will include a review of the importance of school-family-community partnerships and the distinct and important roles that adults have in supporting their children’s education. It will also highlight models of evidence-based, equity-focused family engagement and the opportunities for educators to be family engagement leaders in their schools. Participants will walk equipped to develop a plan to apply these strategies in their work.
